The Online Multimedia Journalism Course

[This is an example of the text based story. A podcast and an audio visual component are embedded. This story is NOT an example of a story which would score full marks ]

"It is difficult to teach online journalism when sometimes, you do not have 'online' " says Vidyaratha Kissoon.  Kissoon has been teaching the Online Multimedia Journalism course at the UG Centre for Communication Studies  .

The course was first offered in 2010 . One part of this course assessment is an
assignment which has different components.

The course outline shows the depth of the material which is covered. The course assessement asks students to provide a portfolio of work.

In 2014,  there is a component which includes a story with a data visualisation. Students can select any theme and do the assignment

According to one student " The most enjoyable part was actually going out into the public and interviewing people and their take on makeup. People indeed have different preferences when it comes to the brand and the application on makeup."

Another student found this the most difficult part of the assignment "The difficult part was when you had to interview persons and as soon they hear what it was about they would say not know or they don't have time."

A podcast which was produced by Lauressa Mentore in 2012 is used here as a demonstration of how audio can help to enhance stories.

The audio visual piece requires a lot of work. In 2012, Kissoon did an audio slideshow based on the GuyExpo . This audioslideshow would not receive full marks.

Data Visualisation
There are not very many examples of data driven journalism in Guyana. Some columnists and contributors would make reference to economic data. The sample data driven story is based around some data reported in the Guyanese media about research done on Suicide in Essequibo.

The evaluation and feedback from 2013 show some of the challenges of doing the course.

Example of a data story

[This is a prototype of a text story with a data visualization. It is based on research reported in the Guyanese media about research done on suicide in Essequibo. This story is NOT at the standard required for the assignment. It provides a prototype. ]

The DPC 2204 will be doing a data visualisation piece. There are limited sources of public data in Guyana. In 2014,, the American University of Peace Studies (AUPS) conducted research in Essequibo. The Guyana Times and the Guyana Chronicle  carried some details of the data which the AUPS presented.

This chart was produced using Google Spreadsheets.

It would appear that many persons think that ways of gainful employment would be the best way to prevent suicide. There is also a need for counselling services for those who are considering suicide.

{This is a demo story only }

This is a sample infograph about ochro which is also good for mental health which could be embedded in the  data story.
